Hello, I’m an unemployed single mother of one and am expecting to receive centralized and state tax refunds.

But, I just expected a letter in the mail from EdFund that my defaulted student loan went into collections and if I don’t set up a repayment plot with them they could take my tax refund. I really need my tax refund, and was wondering if I consolidate my defaulted loans now will I still be able to get my tax refund?

They have thrown you an olive branch. They want you to "set up a repayment plot with them". They do not want to bury you. They just want you to set up a plot to address your debts. They want you to be able to survive so that you can pay off the loan and still go your life forward. You will doubtless have to give them some of your tax refund but that is better than having them take it all. You need to make up a viable budget. That is one where you spend less than you earn. That will allow you to pay off your debts and then you can build up the additional facets your personal finances.

Be cautious when you get a loan against your tax return. There are places out there that will fleece you. Question for illustrations on the interest charges. Read the Truth in Lending statement and if you don’t reckon you want to do the loan, refuse it.

The interest charges vary greatly. The charges depend on the amount of your refund and how you receive your money. One major tax preparation firm is now charging 36% interest if you take your refund on a debit card. This is annual interest. If you are only borrowing for two weeks, it comes out to 1.5% of your refund. This is the best deal I am aware of. Call around and question.
